At the end of my first year of teaching, none of my fellow teachers retired or resigned from RHS. There were no teary goodbyes and no boxes to pack. It was comforting for me to still work with the same ~20 teachers during my second year, but ever since then the Riverside family has undergone major changes each year. Multiple teachers have retired, relocated, or even had their position eliminated. With each passing year, change is the only constant.
We have hired many new, young teachers and I have noticed that with every change comes the potential to alter the entire school dynamic. With such a small staff, the addition of even just one passionate teacher with new ideas and fresh perspectives can change the methods and viewpoints of nearly the entire staff. One person...that is all it takes. One person has the power to change the lives of not only their students but also the overall school culture.
It's amazing to reflect upon the changes we have implemented at RHS during the past eight years: advances in technology, Google Drive, 1:1 Initiative, Riverside Roadhouse restaurant, Response to Intervention, renewed passion for the fine arts, new course offerings, and more. I am so grateful when I have the opportunity to learn from fellow teachers who positively impact our school. We can all get jaded about work and other aspects of our lives, but it is always good to remember that one person really can make a difference.
